Silent hills 2 - Director's cut

While there are dozens and dozens of other games that come together to populate the survival horror genre, nearly each one takes a different route to scare you. While the Resident Evil games oftentimes choose to use noises and jolts to scare you, games like Fatal Frame use the idea of being surrounded by entities you canít see to send chills down your spine. Silent Hill 2 relies on another method, and thatís through creepy story telling. You play as James Sunderland a man who should complain about the postal service, as there appears to be a major delay in the receiving of his mail. He got a letter from his wife, Mary, telling him to go to Silent Hill to see her. Thatís not a problem, but the fact that his wife has been dead for years and heís just getting the letter today is just a small one to say the least.

So as you begin the game, youíre already a little bit tense. The town is draped in a foggy veil, which could be viewed as a representation of Jamesís current situation. As James trudges through the woods surrounding Silent Hill, he eventually stumbles across a woman by the name of Angela who pleads with him to leave the town. Still curious, James ignores her warning and continues on into Silent Hill. From the very moment James steps into town, heís aware that something is extremely wrong here. The town, no pun intended, is silent. Besides Angela, thereís no one to be found. His only company is a mysterious blood stain on the pavement

icewind dale 2

Icewind Dale II, unlike previous Infinity Engine games, uses the 3rd Edition D&D rules. This doesn't affect the core gameplay so much as to confuse players who are used to the 2nd Edition rules, but it does allow the player much more freedom to customize his or her characters. Rather than statistics being determined by a roll of the dice, the game uses a much fairer system in which players get a set amount of points to raise their stats with during character creation. The move to 3rd Edition also adds a more refined skill system to the mix. Depending on a character's intelligence level, he or she will receive a certain amount of skill points that can be used to upgrade various skills, ranging from pickpocketing to alchemy to almost anything else you could imagine in a fantasy-based RPG.

Another new feature of the 3rd Edition is "feats". To those of you that played Fallout or Fallout 2, feats are very similar to the "perks" of those games. Every so often, you will get to choose a one-time offer of a bonus to your character. These feats can be anything from increased fire resistance to better proficiency with a given weapon. For those of you who are sick of the races and classes available in the first game, Black Isle has addes some new ones to the mix, including the much-loved Drow elves. Also, if you aren't sure you have the know-how to craft a good party (or if you're just plain lazy), the game comes with pre-made adventuring companions for you to use, complete with their own backstories. Overall, this allows the player to create characters exactly how they see fit, unlike previous games in the series.

The magic circle

The Magic Circle casts you as a playtester for a game that has been in development for ages and is still nowhere near completion, something most gamers can easily grok in this age of Kickstarter campaigns and Early Access. What began as a sci-fi game has become a swords and sorcery adventure, and as you progress through the unfinished world you'll find the spines of a pixelated space station poking through the fantasy crust, with long-forgotten robots and drones mingling amongst the wizards and giant spiders.

Before long, you'll gain the ability to make changes to the game by tampering with its programming. Specifically, you can alter the behavior of the game's entities. After trapping a hostile dog-creature, for example, you can change its alignment from viewing you as an enemy to seeing you as a friend. You can assign it new enemies, which it will then attack. You can also completely strip it it of attributes, leaving it inert while storing those properties in your library to be applied to other creatures. None of this involves writing code yourself, mind you: it's accomplished by simply selecting words from a list and dropping them into f
Fields.

Gothic 3

Gothic 3 isn't an exercise in pushing back against the colossus of Oblivion, that RPG that now pretty much defines the fantasy genre in Europe and the U.S. Given the latter's pedigree, that would have been foolish. Instead, Gothic 3 is an attempt to successfully improve on both the ancient fantasy template and its own personal formula. In a sense, that's its own reward: the first two in the series fell in between the pre- and post cracks of Morrowind, usurped by that game's scale. And while it did gain some popularity on the continent, we'd gather it passed a lot of you by. This time, however, by concentrating on evolving in its own niche, number three succeeds on its own terms: an interface that actually works, a modern lick of paint, and an (albeit misfiring) attempt to revise its fighting system; now's as good an opportunity as ever to step onto that carousel of orc-bashing familiarity.
Devoid of reams of back-story and supplementary literature, don't worry, it's as easy for newcomers to jump in as it is for veterans - maybe a little too easy for those who invested their hard-earned time in its prequels. Here's all you need to know: you've just returned from adventure and intrigue on the island of Khorinis only to find your homeland of Myrtana conquered by orcs (and your stats inexplicably reset to zero, coincidentally). It's up to you, then, whether you work on uniting the rebels to liberate the land, or side with the mercenaries and kiss some scaly green bottom for a share of power and one of the alternate endings. All the while there's the whiff of something bigger beneath the surface, a dangerous element that threatens to rear its head the further you progress. As per bloody usual.

Command and conquer red alert 3 Uprising

Uprising, the first expansion to last year's excellent RTS Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, is a curious beast. It's a download only, standalone, entirely single-player experience. That's right, we said entirely single-player experience.

Which is a strange choice from developer EA Los Angeles. The best thing about Red Alert 3 was the co-operative campaign - well, that's we we thought anyway. Perhaps the decision to provide four new single-player mini-campaigns and a vast single-player Challenge mode is an indication that we were wrong. RTS expansions exist to give fans more of what they liked from the games they're expanding upon. That there is no multiplayer in Uprising suggests that most people who bought Red Alert 3 played it on their own.

True or false, what we have here, for £15 from the EA Store, is an expansion that at times impresses by making you feel like an RTS god, then disappoints because it falls short of the high-quality spectacle that was the original, and feels, well, just a bit lonely.

Uprising picks up where RA3 finished. At first only the Soviet mini-campaign and the bonus dungeon crawl mini-campaign are available. The Soviet campaign begins with a trademark tongue-in-cheek live action clip (Uprising brings half-an-hour's worth of new footage). The Allies, having dealt with the Soviets and the Empire of the Rising Sun, and with Tim Curry's Premier Cherdenko safely behind bars, are wallowing in the glory of their victory. European Union president Rupert Thornley, played by Malcolm McDowell, is addressing the media, downplaying rumours of a Soviet resistance force. It exists of course, as we soon discover, and we're in charge of making it work on the battlefield, with a little help from the returning Intelligence Officer Dasha Fedorovich, who's still showing just enough boob to distract us from the Days of our Lives acting.

Guilty gear X2 reload

Fighting games were ubiquitous in video arcades for more than a decade, until the video arcades themselves began to die off. Home console technology surpassed arcades, and so we lost our incentive to play games in public. And though we've since been treated to arcade-perfect home conversions of some truly great fighting games, if you've ever been thrilled to play these games in a competitive environment, then you know it's just not the same to play them at home against the computer or even with the same group of friends. No, fighting games are all about taking on all challengers. And now the true spirit of fighting games is reemerging in games like the new, online-enabled Guilty Gear X2 #Reload. Online play is definitely the main attraction here, despite a few apparent issues with the implementation. But, make no mistake: This is a great 2D fighter even if you don't take it online, and it features all the depth, creativity, and responsive action you'd expect from a top-quality game in this vein. Factor in a budget price point, and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload becomes a genuine must-have for fighting game.

need for speed - hot pursuit

The concept of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit could have been dreamed up at a middle-school boy's sleepover party. What if there was a place where both cops and the illegal street racers drove Lamborghinis, Mercedes, Bentleys, Porches and other drool-worthy marques around a gigantic network of roads at supremely high rates of speed? Oh, and wouldn't it be sweet if they could crash into each other and drop spike strips and call in helicopters and run each other off the road? And when you crash into someone, it should drop into ultra-slow motion and give you a ton of points!

What I love about Hot Pursuit is that it completely embraces that spirit of adolescent madness and just runs with it. There is no wedged-in storyline here. You can play as a cop or a racer, and you increase your rank or wanted level as you run people off the road, drift around corners, drive into oncoming traffic (as a racer), and generally behave like a motoring maniac. Along the way, you'll earn Bounty to unlock new cars, expand your arsenal of weapons/gadgets and open new sections of the Seacrest County map. The more you drive, crash, smash and win, the more cool stuff you get. It's simple, and it works.

Need for speed - Carbon

After Need for Speed Underground outsold all other games in 2004, the largest independent game publisher in the world adroitly kept the series coming without a hitch. Last year's Most Wanted shipped at Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch and introduced a creative take on story-telling by using filtered customized FMV to give the familiar racer a fresh presentation. The police were back with a ferocious vengeance. And it offered a particularly North-West vibe to it.
This year's version, need for speed - Carbon, which refers to Carbon Canyon where racers duel for territory in the city below, is a minor shake-up for the series, shifting in new features, shifting out others, while continuing the FMV-heavy story-telling from Most Wanted. Carbon, in other words, is a decent update to last year's game with improved graphics, excellent Autosculpt customization, a different progression system, and an all-around solid take on the game. It's not revolutionary, it's not brilliant, but it's good, deep racing.
